The story happened in 1947, banker Andy because his wife had extramarital affair, mistakenly accused of drunk shot and killing his wife and her lover. Andy was sentenced to life imprisonment, which means the  rest of his life will be  in the Shawshank prison.

Reid was sentenced in 1927 to life imprisonment for murder, and  a number of parole have been unsuccessful. He has now become "authority figures"  in the Shawshank prison. As long as you can afford the money, he almost had the ways to get what you want such as cigarettes, candy, wine, or even marijuana. . Whenever  new prisoners came,  everyone would bet who will cry at the first night. Reid thought fragile and bookish Andy must cry.  Results of Andy's silence, he lost two packs of cigarettes. But at the same time, he saw Andy in a new look.

Since a long time, Andy does not touch any person. When people complained, he was strolling in the yard as if in the park. A month later, Andy asked Reid to help him with stone hammer. He explained that he had a such hobby to carve some small things to kill time. And he said he tried to escape the routine check of police. Because Andy  excelled in the knowledge of financial system, he got rid of the heavy manual labor and harassment of other abnormal prisoners. Soon reputable Andy began  to deal with tax issues for more and more guards  and was asked  the advice of entering a higher school for children. Andy has gradually become the important tool to launder money. The life in prison was very insipid. Andy started to continually write letters to the state legislature. Because his insistence, he finallly applied a sum of money for a prison library .

 
The peace of Andy's life was broke with a new prisoner's coming who knew murderer. But when Andy proposed requirement to re-hear the case according to this new  situation, he was met with refusal. What's worse, he was punished  severe solitary confinement for one month.  In the confinement, warden visited him.  When he said he insisited to find the perpetrators, governor was in rage. In order to prevent the release of Andy,  prison killed insider to frame up Andy.

Facing the cruel reality, Andy became depressed. He started to plan to break prison.  Through his persistency trial, he finally succeeded.
